Cybersecurity researchers have identified a method of spreading malware to Android devices through deceptive volcano eruption alerts. D3Labs, an Italian cybersecurity company, reported their findings on October 16, revealing that malicious actors were exploiting the IT-Alert service—a newly implemented public alert system by the Italian government. This system is designed to relay essential information to citizens during emergencies, such as natural disasters. The perpetrators devised a strategy to lure unsuspecting victims into downloading the malicious software. They created a fraudulent website mimicking IT Alert, claiming, "Due to potential volcano eruptions, a national earthquake may occur. Download the app to monitor the region's potential impact." Notably, this deceptive website exclusively targeted Android users. If accessed through a desktop browser or an iOS device, the site would redirect to the legitimate IT Alert website.
